The Sensex and Nifty ended at record highs on Tuesday, with the Sensex gaining 629 points or 1.7% to close at 37,327 and the Nifty climbing 1.8% to settle at 18,499.
Reliance Industries extended its winning streak for a fifth consecutive session, rising 2.9% to close at a fresh record high of Rs 1,586.8. IT stocks such as Infosys, HCL Technologies and Wipro also gained, rallying between 1.5-3%.
Metal stocks also jumped, with Hindalco, Vedanta and JSW Steel up nearly 5%, 4% and 6%, respectively, ITC and L&T ended over 2% higher each, while Bajaj Finance was up 4.6%. Among the losers were Yes Bank, down 1.4%, and UPL, down 0.7%.
Meanwhile, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net buyers in the capital markets, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,307.06 crore on Tuesday, according to provisional exchange data.
