A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s eastern coast early on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. The quake originated about 19 miles (30 kilometres) off the coast of Yamaguchi prefecture at a depth of 21 miles (34.2 kilometres). There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for possible strong aftershocks but did not issue a tsunami warning. A previous quake of magnitude 6.4 in the same region back in October 2018 caused no serious damage or injuries, although felt in Tokyo and other parts of the country.
The quake rattled furniture and sent some residents fleeing from their homes, but the magnitude of the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami warning.
