German troops are permitted to continue in Mali for one more year by the German parliament

On April 22nd, 2021, the German parliament authorized troops to remain in Mali for a final year. The Bundestag approved a vote to extend the deployment of Germany’s troops in Mali’s Sahel region in a non-combat role for one additional year. This means that Germany’s commitment in Mali will be extended until April 2022. The decision came after Germany asked its European partners for more support in the region. Germany has had troops in the region since 2013, when the United Nations first deployed its MINUSMA force in order to bring stability and security to the especially vulnerable region.
