In October 2020, Belgium and Iran conducted a prisoner swap in Oman, in which Belgian aid worker Xoroz Kamalvandi and Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi were exchanged. Kamalvandi had been convicted in Belgium for his role in a 2018 bomb plot in France, while Assadi had been convicted by a Belgian court for his involvement in the same incident. Kamalvandi was first arrested in 2018 while attending a fundraiser in Iran. The prisoner swap was reportedly negotiated in Oman with the help of Omani officials. Neither government commented on the details of the exchange.
