According to a recent report from the Graduate School of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China is expected to see a fresh wave of coronavirus infections in the coming weeks, with an estimate of 65 million cases per week.
The report suggests that the new wave of Covid-19 infections will be concentrated mainly in the densely populated eastern region, particularly in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Henan provinces.
The report estimates that the new wave will peak in April and May, with the weekly case count jumping from 50 million infections in late March to 65 million in early April. It added that the total number of cases could reach as high as 860 million by the beginning of May.
The researchers behind the report cautioned that the situation could be even worse if the Chinese government’s proposed measures to contain the spread are not implemented effectively and efficiently.
