Despite the controversy surrounding him, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that he is officially entering the race for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination. DeSantis made the announcement in a tweet, saying, “Today I am proud to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America.”
While many people support DeSantis, some have criticized the Florida governor for his record on environment, education and justice reform policies. He has also been critical of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drawing rebuke from public health experts.
DeSantis will enter a crowded primary field of more than 15 candidates, all hoping to win the Republican presidential nomination. He will face an uphill battle, but he is hoping his groundswell of conservative support will help him win the nomination and eventually the White House.
