In July 2019, an American tourist was seriously injured after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the waters off the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. The tourist, who had been visiting the islands on vacation, suffered serious lacerations to his right leg and was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment. After several hours of surgery, the tourist was released and returned to the United States, where he is expected to make a full recovery. The species of shark responsible for the attack was not identified.
