Although reports of the size of the army chief’s force vary, it is generally accepted that the Russian forces in Bakhmut numbered several thousand. There is no evidence to suggest that as many as 20,000 perished in the combat. It is possible that the number of fatalities could have been significantly higher than the official estimates, but it is impossible to verify an exact figure.
