On March 21, 2015, a 54-year-old man was killed in an accident involving a paternoster elevator in the city of Berlin, Germany. The man had been riding in the elevator—which is much like an old-fashioned merry-go-round, with a series of open compartments suspended from a continuous loop of chain—when it suddenly stopped, and he was crushed between the floor and a compartment which had become stuck in the wall. The cause of the accident has not been determined.
