The large-scale joint military exercises will involve South Korean and U.S. ground, air, naval, and special operations forces. According to South Korea’s defense ministry, the primary goal of the exercises is to enhance joint operational capabilities. South Korean officials have also said that the exercises are meant to “demonstrate the allies’ determination for a strong response to any North Korean provocations.” The exercises will take place near the demilitarized zone that separates the two Koreas. The drills will include simulated exercises, such as close air support missions, live-fire target shooting, and simulated naval engagements. It is not yet known how long the exercises will last.
