Fawad Chaudhry, a close aide to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has left the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Although he announced his resignation from the party in January 2021, he officially severed ties with the party in February.
Chaudhary has been a member of the PTI since its inception in 1996. He served as Imran Khan’s spokesman during his 2018 election campaign as well as held the position of Minister for Science and Technology in the Imran Khan led-cabinet.
Fawad Chaudhary left the party citing differences in “style, understanding and vision” between him and the party’s leadership and stating that the party had changed drastically since it took office in 2018.
In an interview with the media, Chaudhary also accused the party of not taking decisions in the public interest and spoke out against the alleged corruption in the party.
He has since formed his own political platform, The Republic Platform, and is expected to launch his own political party. He has however stated that his new party will not be “anti- PTI”.
