When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed his “anti-woke” agenda into law in June 2021, it was seen as a rebuke of the progressive public school curriculum that taught such ideas as Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights. One of the policies he proposed was the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would prevent public schools from discussing or teaching topics related to sexuality, gender, and sexual orientations. The bill was then replaced by the “Monkey This Up” bill, which requires that when teaching certain scientific or historical topics, discussions should “present competing scientific theories in an objective manner rather than cave to a rigid ideological perspective”. Despite its name, the bill has nothing to do with monkeys and instead was meant to refer to the fact that the course material should not be “messed up” with a one-sided agenda. Critics of the bill argue that it gives the government too much power to control what is taught in public schools, while proponents argue that it is necessary to keep schools free of biased agendas.
