On August 12th, 2020, a 29-year-old man was arrested by British police after crashing his car into the gates of Downing Street, the residence of the UK’s Prime Minister, in London.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time, and while no one was injured and the gates were able to absorb most of the impact, police are mounting an investigation into a possible terrorism-related motive.
The man in custody is reportedly a British national, and reports suggest he was mentally ill and had become upset after an argument with someone shortly before the incident.
Police are said to be treating this crash as an isolated incident and have not drawn any links to terrorism. However, they are taking the matter seriously, and have cordoned off the area while their investigation is ongoing.
