According to a study by WalletHub, New York City would be the worst city to launch a career in 2023

According to a new WalletHub report, New York City is the worst place to start a career in 2023. The report, which compiled data from the U.S. Census Bureau, career site Glassdoor, and other sources, ranked the 150 most populous cities on indicators such as hiring opportunities, median starting salary, unemployment rate, housing affordability, and more.

New York City scored poorly in many of the report’s categories: It was ranked 136th for job growth, 127th for the quality of internship opportunities, and 129th for industry variety. The Big Apple scored slightly better when it came to median starting salary (44th) and the number of employed per thousand residents (18th).

Meanwhile, Plano, Texas earned the highest spot on the list as the best city for new and aspiring professionals, followed by Scottsdale, Arizona, and Austin, Texas. These cities had impressive scores in job growth, median starting salary, industry variety, and quality internships, among other categories.

The report reiterates that in today’s competitive job market, career decisions should not be taken lightly. Aspiring professionals should make sure they thoroughly research all potential job and location options before making a definitive choice.
