Morris Chang, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), has expressed his support for US efforts to slow China’s advances in chip technology. In an interview with Reuters, Chang said he believes the US should act to protect its technological leadership, but also warned that any US restrictions on the export of chips to China must be done in a way that does not disrupt global supply chains.
Chang said that TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has not been directly affected by US export restrictions on China’s chipmaker SMIC, but he is concerned about the potential impacts on the industry as a whole. Chang also said that TSMC is committed to protecting its intellectual property and that the company will take legal action if necessary to protect its technology.
