According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the majority of fentanyl entering North America originates in China, and is trafficked through Mexico into the United States and Canada. In 2019, the US Drug Enforcement Agency reported that Mexican cartels have become increasingly involved in the production and trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
