Rupee loses 12 paise to 82.77 against the US dollar as global indicators are mixed

The Indian rupee on Tuesday weakened by 12 paise to close at 82.77 against the US dollar in line with weak global cues. The domestic unit opened flat at 82.65 against the greenback and eventually closed at 82.77, down by 12 paise over its previous close.

During the day, the local currency witnessed high volatility as it touched an intra-day high of 82.62 and low of 82.90. The Indian rupee had settled at 82.65 against the US dollar on Monday. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets, as they bought shares worth Rs 5,412.71 crore on a net basis, according to provisional exchange data.

Meanwhile, on the global front, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.14 per cent to 90.01. On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 147.70 points or 0.31 per cent higher at 48,422.30, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 4.60 points or 0.03 per cent to 14,508.80.
