Eric Garcetti, a former mayor of Los Angeles, is expected to be approved as the US ambassador to India

On March 1, 2021, the U.S. Senate confirmed Eric Garcetti, the former mayor of Los Angeles, as the U.S. ambassador to India. The confirmation comes after President Joe Biden officially nominated Garcetti for the position in November 2020.

Garcetti is the first person of Mexican heritage to hold the post of U.S. ambassador to India. He previously served as mayor of Los Angeles from 2013 to 2021, and spent six years in the Los Angeles City Council before that. Garcetti has also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve since 2005.

Garcetti is expected to take on an active role in strengthening the U.S.-India relationship, and will also focus on deepening economic ties between the two countries. In his confirmation hearings, Garcetti highlighted the importance of expanding trade and investment between the U.S. and India, as well as collaboration on issues such as climate change and countering terrorism.
