The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand on Thursday, May 6, 2021 has prompted a tsunami warning for the region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) issued the warning, saying that hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter. People in the affected area were advised to move to high ground and stay away from the sea. The authorities further noted that the tsunami waves could arrive within minutes to hours after the initial earthquake.
