According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report for 2020, Afghanistan is the most impacted country by terrorism in the world. The GTI report measures the impact of terrorism in 163 countries based on the number of terrorist incidents, fatalities, injuries, and property damage. In 2020, Afghanistan recorded the highest score on the GTI, followed by Iraq, Nigeria, Syria and Somalia.
The GTI report notes that terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, including the Taliban, Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP), and the Haqqani Network, are responsible for the majority of terrorist attacks in the country. In 2020, there were 7,379 terrorist attacks reported in Afghanistan, resulting in 3,912 fatalities and 8,913 injuries. This was an increase of 34% in attacks and 9% in fatalities compared to 2019. The report also found that the majority of attacks in Afghanistan are small in scale and involve explosives.
