In Hong Kong, Disney cuts the Simpsons’ “forced labour” episode

Disney has removed an episode of The Simpsons from its streaming service in Hong Kong, following concerns over its depiction of forced labor.

The episode, titled “Marge in Chains,” originally aired in 1993 and features a storyline in which the family’s matriarch, Marge Simpson, is arrested for shoplifting and sent to a prison in Japan that relies on forced labor from its inmates.

The episode was removed from Disney+ in the region after local advocacy groups and media outlets criticized the show for its portrayal of prisoners in a forced labor camp.

In a statement, Disney said it had removed the episode “out of respect for local sensitivities” and that it was “committed to creating stories and experiences that reflect the rich diversity of the world around us.”
