The extent of threats made against New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern may require her to be provided with ongoing security. In October 2019, Ardern and her office were reportedly receiving “significant” levels of online abuse, including threats of physical and sexual violence. Ardern’s office had to respond to more than 200,000 messages in the week following the Christchurch mosque attacks in March 2019.
While Ardern herself has said that she believes the majority of people in New Zealand are “good and kind” and that she is not personally concerned for her safety, the escalating level of threats against her has led to the Prime Minister’s office receiving advice from security experts. It is likely that Ardern will need to be provided with ongoing security measures to ensure her safety.
