Doomsday Clock Approaches Midnight Faster Than Ever

Before On January 23, 2020, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists adjusted the Doomsday Clock, a symbolic measure of humanity’s proximity to global catastrophe, to its closest ever setting of 100 seconds to midnight. This is the closest the clock has been to midnight since its inception in 1947, when it was set at seven minutes to midnight.

The adjustment reflects the current threats posed by nuclear war, climate change and emerging technologies. The Doomsday Clock was created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a group of scholars and scientists, in order to provide a warning of the increasing danger of global destruction.
