Report: US will increase pressure on China to cease importing Iranian oil

The United States is reportedly mounting pressure on China to stop buying Iranian oil, as part of its campaign of “maximum pressure” against the Islamic Republic.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the US is urging China to stop importing Iranian oil and instead buy US crude in order to avoid US sanctions. The US is reportedly offering incentives such as discounts on crude prices and preferential payment terms.

The US has been applying economic pressure on Iran since President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal in 2018. The Trump administration has also imposed sanctions on Iran’s oil exports and other industries.

China is one of Iran’s biggest oil customers and the US is hoping that by putting pressure on China, it can further isolate Iran and force it to return to the negotiating table.

It remains to be seen whether China will comply with the US’ demands. Beijing has been critical of US sanctions on Iran, and has maintained that it will continue to buy Iranian oil.
