“Job reduction done to avoid much bigger situations…”, said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google

In an effort to mitigate the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced in an email to employees that the company would be reducing its workforce by about 10,000 positions. Pichai wrote that “these reductions are a reflection of the deep impact of the pandemic, and we hope that making these changes now will give us the flexibility to proceed with confidence and strengthen our business for the years ahead.” He also noted that the cuts were necessary to avoid “much worse issues later,” and that the company was doing its best to support those affected by the layoffs.
