As Google and other organisations start mass layoffs, internet users post “dehumanising” anecdotes

The past few weeks have seen massive layoffs at Google, Microsoft, Uber, and other large organizations, leaving many people without jobs. As they come to terms with the reality of the situation, many have taken to social media to share their stories of the “dehumanising” nature of the layoffs.

The stories range from people feeling like they were treated like a “number” to being asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement before being let go. Others have shared stories of being laid off without warning, or being told to leave immediately.

Many of the stories have been met with sympathy and support from other people in the same boat, with many expressing solidarity and offering words of encouragement. Others have used the stories to call for more humane treatment of laid-off employees, and for greater transparency from companies in how they handle mass layoffs.
