In a major setback for Indian-origin engineers, Google has laid off a techie who had waited for six months to join the tech giant. The techie, who was employed in an engineering role, had moved to the US from India in April this year.
The news of the layoff comes amid reports that Google is set to cut about 10,000 jobs this year. The company had earlier announced that it will be cutting 4,000 jobs in the first quarter of 2021.
The techie had joined Google’s Cloud team at their office in Mountain View, California. He had been working with the team for the past six months when he received the pink slip.
The techie, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that he had put in a lot of hard work and effort to get the job at Google and was excited to work with the company. He said that he was disappointed to receive the news of the layoff.
The Indian-origin techie said that he was informed that his role was no longer required at the company and that he was being let go. He said that he was offered three months of severance pay and was asked to sign a separation agreement.
Google has yet to comment on the news of the layoff.
