Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, allegedly tried to leave the United States

According to a new filing from prosecutors in the criminal case against Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, Holmes and her partner Ramesh Balwani attempted to flee the United States after they were indicted in June 2018. The filing alleges that Holmes and Balwani discussed escape plans and made inquiries into foreign passports.

The prosecutors are now asking the judge to revoke Holmes’ bail, arguing that she is a flight risk. The filing includes emails from Holmes and Balwani discussing the possibility of fleeing the country and living in Cuba or Singapore.

Holmes and Balwani are set to go to trial in August 2020 on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.

The filing is the latest development in the ongoing criminal case against Holmes and Balwani. In March, Holmes and Balwani were denied a motion to throw out the case against them. The two have maintained their innocence since being indicted.
