On April 12, 2021, a former soldier in Georgia killed five people, including a police officer, and then shot himself. The incident took place in Rockmart, Georgia, around 6 a.m. local time.
The suspect, identified as William Merideth, was an Army veteran who served two deployments in Iraq between 2003 and 2004. He was reportedly armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing body armor during the incident.
The victims were identified as Officer Ahmaud Arbery, 25; Maurice Harris, 59; Caleb Edwards, 25; Tracey Edwards, 54; and Cedric Doss, 54. All of the victims were residents of Rockmart.
Merideth was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his self-inflicted gunshot wound and is expected to survive. He has been charged with five counts of murder and is currently being held without bond.
The incident is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
