France: A million people protest a rise in the retirement age

In response to the French government’s proposed changes to the retirement system, which included raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, over a million people took to the streets in protest across France on December 5th, 2019. The nationwide demonstrations, which were largely organized by the nation’s labour unions, saw protesters marching in cities from Paris to Marseille to Strasbourg. The protests were largely peaceful, but there were some reports of violence in Paris, where police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse some of the crowds.
