Three crucial instances in Jacinda Ardern’s tenure as prime minister of New Zealand

  1. Leading the Response to the Christchurch Mosque Shootings: In March 2019, after the horrific mosque shootings in Christchurch, Prime Minister Ardern showed tremendous leadership. She immediately reached out to her Muslim community, visiting them in their mosques and standing with them in solidarity. She also swiftly introduced gun law reforms that banned semi-automatic weapons and sought to prevent similar attacks from happening again.
  2. Reinvigorating Climate Action: Prime Minister Ardern has made climate action a priority, with her government introducing a Zero Carbon Act that aims to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050, as well as committing to planting one billion trees by 2028. She also aims to make New Zealand the world’s first carbon neutral country by 2050.
  3. Introducing Well-being Budgets: Prime Minister Ardern has led the charge on introducing “well-being budgets”, which focus on social and environmental measures as well as economic ones. This includes a focus on mental health, child poverty, and reducing inequality, as well as investing in renewable energy resources.
