‘Unjustified cruelty’: Moscow demands probe after Russian journalist pepper-sprayed by Minneapolis police

The usage of violent drive by police in opposition to journalists, together with a Russian correspondent who was pepper-sprayed within the face, is unacceptable, Russia’s International Ministry mentioned, urging the US to analyze the incident.

This comes after a RIA Novosti correspondent, Mikhail Turgiev, and a gaggle of US journalists had been attacked by police in Minneapolis whereas overlaying the continuing riots provoked by the loss of life of an African American man, George Floyd. The crew was focused with rubber bullets and Turgiev was pepper-sprayed, regardless of displaying his press ID.

Police assaults on media workers executing their skilled duties are unacceptable, the ministry added, calling the legislation enforcers’ use of pepper spray on Turgiev “unjust cruelty.”

The ministry urged the US authorities to conduct an intensive investigation into the incident, reminding Washington of its obligation to make sure that journalists can perform their actions on US soil in a way that’s secure and unhindered.

Worldwide organizations and human rights NGOs also needs to look into the assault on the Russian correspondent, it added.
